How Much Is Enough?

NFS

Oil on stretched canvas

50cm width x 61cm height

How Much is Enough? explores the tension I feel when painting from reference photos I haven’t taken myself. Even when permission is granted, there’s still a question of ownership, credit and integrity.

This painting is of my husband, Mitch Loan, an outstanding human whom I’ve had the pleasure of knowing for over three decades. This photo was taken by our friend and photographer Nick Lawrence. I struggled with how to appropriately acknowledge Nick’s role in the image. Eventually, I chose to paint his original instagram post, resolving, in my own way, the ongoing question: how much is enough?
